John Coonrod ... The Hunger Project |
John Coonrod is one of the
original volunteer leaders and currently Vice-president of The Hunger Project.
John has been instrumental in the formulation and management of the Africa Prize
and the development of the Strategic Planning-in-Action, and in charge of communications.
John was trained as a physicist at Stanford and Berkeley, during which time he
was active in the civil rights and anti-war movement. He also worked as a research
physicist at Princeton University. As a physicist, he was involved in the design
and construction of the High-Energy Astronomical Observatory satellite and the
first-whole body CAT scanner. |
Lyle Estill ... Piedmont Biofuels |
Lyle Estill calls himself
the "Vice-president of Stuff" for the Piedmont Befouls Cooperative which
he co-founded in Moncure, N.C. Through his participation in the alternative energy
production, Lyle is one of today's godfathers of the biodiesel movement. He teaches
an energy class, runs a highly successful energy blog, co-owns a Canadian alternative
energy company, and has been a computer and software entrepreneur. He has a recently
published book, Biodiesel Power: The Passion, the People, and the Politics of
the Next Renewable Fuel, which has been described as "part journalism, part
storytelling, and part speculation on an industry that is not yet fully birthed."
Lyle Estill promises to be an informative and comical historian of the biodiesel
journey. Lyle's search for sustainability puts him in the pulpit for energy reform. |
Dr. June Scobee Rodgers ... Challenger Learning Centers
| Dr.
June Scobee Rodgers is the widow of Challenger Space Shuttle 51-L's Commander,
Dick Scobee. She is the founding chair of Challenger Center for Space Science
Education, an organization conceived and founded by June and the other family
members 20 years ago to continue the educational mission of the ill-fated Challenger
flight. June is a lifetime educator and is proud to acknowledge that she has taught
every grade from kindergarten through college. At the time of the Challenger explosion,
June was serving as chair of the gifted and talented department of the University
of Houston Clear Lake. In addition, she is a noted author of Silver Linings which
commemorates the dedication of purpose and resiliency of the human spirit. June
spends much of her time working with the over 50 Challenger Learning Centers which
have become models for change and educational reform in math and science. |
Dr. Reese Halter ... Global Forest Science |
Dr. Reese Halter is an award-winning
conservation biologist, research scientist, children's book author, family man,
the host of Dr Reese's Planet, and founder and president of Global Forest Science.
With an international multidisciplinary team of 140 scientists, Global Forest
Science is a world leader in forest science research and has often been likened
to the Red Adair's of the forest biology world. Global Forest Science's many victories
range from legislation to protect the threatened westslope cutthroat trout of
British Columbia, protection of the world's largest ant colony, opening an international
insect quarantine facility to helping to save New Zealand's multi billion dollar
forestry and agriculture industries from the Australian painted apple moth. |
Joanie
Klar Bruce ... Integrated Sustainable Solutions | Joanie
is a social architect, media producer and founder of "Integrated Sustainable
Solutions, identifying and integrating the 'best practices" of the "practical
visionaries" of the green movement and holistic global health arenas. Living
on 4 continents and in many tribal cultures for more than half of her life, Joanie
has developed projects that support sustainable development, empowering woman,
indigenous people, health and experiential education. She has been a prominent
board member of International Bamboo Foundation, Native Voices Foundation and
Global Health Alliance. In May 2003, she received an eco-ward at the UN for her
efforts in sustainable development. | |
John Sagebiel PhD. ... University of Nevada
- Reno |
Dr. John Sagebiel is the
Environmental Affairs Manager for the University of Nevada, Reno where he is responsible
for working to reduce the University's ecological impact, and insuring compliance
with environmental regulations. He holds a doctorate in Environmental Chemistry
and a bachelor's degree in Environmental Toxicology, both from UC Davis, and a
LEED Accredited Professional certificate from the US Green Building Council. He
spent 14 years at the Desert Research Institute doing research primarily on air
pollution. More recent work focused on alternative fuels, alternative energy and
sustainability issues. He and his wife developed a sustainable zero-net-energy
home in Reno that he continues to monitor and study. | |
