This month, LIVING LIGHTLY takes a look at one of our most significant environmental decisions: our automobile.

Now, there are some very common sense approaches to reducing our dependency on gasoline powered vehicles that we have all heard about: Use of Mass Transit, Walking or Bicycling when practical, Carpooling to work.

Sound familiar?? We know we SHOULD reduce our driving but even knowing what to do doesn't mean we'll do it. We LIKE having this freedom of mobility!

So, the next best thing would be to look at not only WHEN we drive but also WHAT we drive. Until now, we have had few choices when it came to our mode of transportation....the top car manufacturers have offered us more or less the same engine design for years. And while it may appear that high powered, low efficiency sport utility vehicles (SUVs) have become the standard in transportation, more and more design time is being devoted to ALTERNATIVES to the combustion engine automobile.

With that in mind, let's take a look at what's already come off the drawing board and what will be available in the coming months:Check out the links below for sites devoted to the topic of alternative transportation:

What has always driven the car manufacturers (pun intended!) is consumer demand. Today, demand is high for SUV's. If we want to see a change to GREEN TRANSPORTATION, we need to create a new demand. Enough of us need to voice our preferences in high enough numbers to ensure that these vehicles become and remain a commercial and economic success.

Our Living Lightly advice for this month is just this: Next time you stop in at your local car dealership, ASK to see what they have to offer in alternative powered vehicles. Ask them what is on the drawing board and when it will be available. Before you ask, "Does this car come in yellow?" ask, "Does this car come in a high efficiency, low polluting, alternative fuel source model?" You may be pleasantly surprised by what they say!
